Myspace Wrench Flash Tools 7/16/2006

We've been watching more and more users getting to know about us over the past couple weeks, and we're excited to see everything take place. We came in to this wanting to use our skills to do new things, create new tools, and share them with all myspace users.

We have a few plans in the works, and we would love to talk about them, but there are just too many "so so" people out there looking to take someone's idea and run with it. So, we will leave all the new releases to surprise! Check back often, and if you'd like, contact us with any tools you'd like to see.

Till then, have fun!

Myspace Flash Player Update 7/23/2006

Myspace has recently started making new changes and requirements regarding the Flash player, and Flash content on the site. All myspace users must now update their Flash player to version 9.0, which was just released around three weeks ago. Myspace has updated their Flash players, and are forcing myspace members to update if they wish to continue using myspace Flash content.

The rush to update was largely due to the recent burst of unwanted Flash movie content problems that affected user pages and also the navigation of visitors. There were bad people exploiting bugs and/or security flaws in the Flash player, and using the discoveries to take advantage of myspace users. The Flash player alone was not a problem, it is those bad people exploiting security holes... so we can thank them for starting the Flash player 9 update, but at the same time, I'm sure we'd all like to get our hands on them for just a minute.

This Flash update on myspace will not only help keep users safe, it will also also limit outgoing links in Flash content. This is good and bad. Myspace will apparently use a new attribute in the Flash movie content code (allow networking="internal"), which will prevent Flash content from linking myspace users to any other web site other than myspace.com. For Flash content and Flash widget makers, this can cause some pretty big damage, in terms of obtaining new users who view or use their tools.

We, however think this is good. We are glad to hear that there is something helping to keep the large amount of myspace users safer. It is also one of the biggest changes we've seen from myspace lately.

The Future Of "Social Networks" Like Myspace 7/27/2006

For the last few years, social networking has grown at an unbelievable rate. Many social websites launch almost everyday it seems, and the big ones, of course are growing faster everyday. Myspace is not only the largest, but the owners are now worried more than ever about the problems they're facing. Who knows how long it will take them to fix them.

Today, a new patent on "Social Networking" was awarded to Friendster (friendster.com). Now, there is a possibility that many similar social networking websites will be facing a huge problem, and Myspace is one of them. We were so surprised, that we just had to read the patent. It is a very hard thing to do, so we're going to study it some more to see what potential there is for this patent to be used against websites like Myspace.

This information is new, and we're very anxious to see where this leads. For now, the best we can do is guess what could happen if Friendster's patent holds against Myspace. If it does, we think that there will probably be three options that Friendster might exercise. 1) Right to force shutdown. 2) Licensing negotiations. 3) Complete legal battles.

Who knows... but we're definitely keeping an eye out.

Friendster's Patent Link - Read the patent if you want, and let us know what you think.

Myspace Advertising - For better? OR For worse? 8/24/2006

Advertising on Myspace is on track for a big change, and in our opinion, it's going to be exploited and "basically purchased" by the ever-spreading Google company. They've recently announced a multi-year deal for Google to be the sole provider of search results and contextual ads across Myspace in exchange for at least $900 million of guaranteed revenue to the Fox Interactive Media Network, which owns Myspace.

The Plan:

Myspace to make almost $1,000,000,000 (one billion) dollars in just three years off of Myspace users. And if Myspace is making that much, one could only imagine what Google stands to make. Folks... that is a lot of ads.

What will the effects be?

At this point, it's just one of those "let's wait and see what happens" kind of thing. Soon enough, we will see what these companies are made of, and what they really think of the millions of Myspace users. Hopefully no blood is shed in fights over the Myspace "cash cow"... so it's called, because the result will be more money for the companies, and more ads forced on the users.

Myspace said revenue was reaching large numbers and that it had been doubling every four months or so this year, but also stated that they've "just scratched the surface".

For those who didn't know, Yahoo was actually providing search services and ads through their new ad network, but they were basically dropped. What could be the reason for dropping Yahoo? Oh wait... the money company called... that's right. Too bad for Yahoo. We're actually hoping Yahoo continues it's new path as we see a good future.

All we can do now is hope that things don't get out of hand with this new "cash cow milking season". Does that mean Myspace users are teats? We hope not!

Myspace Cracks on Music Uploads 10/30/2006

Up until now, myspacer's were able to upload any music to their profile. Whether it was independent bands, groups, or major label artists, it was easy to add the tunes to the profile. But now, Myspace is being forced to integrate a new system that will check uploaded music files by using an audio "finger printing" technology by a company in California, to recognize copyrighted music files.

It's unclear at this point as to what, if any consequences there are, but at least there is more protection against copyright infringement. Personally, we feel the protection is great for the independents, but for the big boys... they just make too much money anyway. But, laws are laws... and we must abide by them.

This looks like a great opportunity for myspacer's to start seeking tunes in the Design Center.

Watchout For Ebay On Your Social Website 3/5/2007

So, as it is today, social websites such as Facebook, Bebo, and Myspace are big hitters on the web. We're talking hundreds of millions of users between the sites. It all starts out innocent... a cool website attracts users, the website grows, then it becomes time to exploit revenue possibilities! In layman's terms: once a website is big, it can cash in on the users.

Then, you also get commerce monsters like Ebay (also known as Feebay), who are always looking for more ways to reap in revenue for their hungry shareholders. That's right... Feebay is working to strike deals with your favorite social website. They're going to stick their expensive services all up in the mix. Pretty soon, you may have to bid on your messages! No... just kidding (we hope), but yes, Ebay is trying to put their services in front of your face through your favorite social website.

Frankly, no one here likes Ebay. As a matter of fact, most of Ebay users don't even like Ebay. It's just not the cool auction site that it once was. It's become a money hungry, non-caring, big headed, take your money and laugh at you kind of company. We even watched a tv show on ebay and their users. It was Disgusting!

So, if you happen to start seeing Ebay/Feebay stuff all over your social web hangout... do something about it! Complain to the website owners! Otherwise, it will only get worse.

And we're also wondering... is Google happy about that? Since they are providing services to Myspace, and Google the SEARCH ENGINE COMPANY is also trying to market their Checkout service which is a direct competitor of Paypal, which also happens to be owned by Ebay. WHAT A TWISTED WEB!!! Search engine companies starting financial services...???
